Alex Verba is the
managing partner of the firm. His practice focuses on oil and gas transactions,
international tax planning, transfer pricing, technology transfers,
international transactions, M&A and joint ventures. His experience in
international transactions, tax planning and oil and gas matters includes work
at the D.C. law firm of Cole Correte & Abrutyn, specializing in
international tax planning and transfer pricing matters as well as an in-house
attorney for Mobil Corporation in Fairfax, VA and London from 1996-2000. He has
successfully negotiated numerous production sharing, pipeline transportation
and marketing agreements worldwide as well as assisted with successfully
resolving several multibillion dollar tax audits. His major deals in the CIS
and Europe included North Caspian Offshore Consortium (currently the largest
exploration project in the world), Mobil-BP downstream alliance in Europe,
Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC), Oguz and Lerik Deniz PSAs in Azerbaijan,
Sakhalin-3 deal in Russia, and numerous others. He then continued advising
major oil companies in London on tax and legal issues. He also applied his
legal and business expertise in a true oil industry environment working as a
tax manager in Karachaganak gas condensate field, a multibillion venture in
Kazakhstan between four top international oil companies.
Mr. Verba combines the acute sense of an experienced business negotiator and the technological knowledge of an engineer and, over the years, Mr. Verba has developed particular expertise in the area of negotiations of fiscal provisions of oil/gas agreements and resolutions of tax disputes with foreign governments. More recently, Mr. Verba has developed a legal practice related to renewable energies and technology transfers. In addition, Mr. Verba has been assisting Middle East technology companies and has been involved in the negotiations of several recent energy and transportation deals in Central Asia and the Baltics.
Mr. Verba holds Bachelor of Science degree from Technological Institute of Odessa, Ukraine, Juris Doctorate from University of San Francisco, Law School and Master in Tax (LLM) with distinction from Georgetown Law Center, Washington, D.C. He is admitted to practice in California and the District of Columbia and is currently a member of the Association of International Petroleum Negotiators and International Law section of D.C. bar. He speaks fluent Russian and Ukrainian.
